BRIAN MILLER

Guitarist Brian Miller came to Irish traditional music as a 17-year-old way up in Bemidji, Minnesota. He appeared on the Twin Cities Irish music scene in 1998 as guitarist and singer with The Gaels. His time with The Gaels has taken him all around Minnesota and to a number of festivals large and small including the Silverton Jubilee in Silverton, Colorado. More recently, in addition to continuing his work with The Gaels, Brian is an on-call guitar accompanist for a number of Irish musicians throughout the region. He performs often in duet with accomplished flautist/piper Laura MacKenzie and the past year has seen the formation of duo 5 Mile Chase with fiddle player Django Amerson. In addition to these steady projects he has backed renowned uillean piper Paddy Keenan, flute player Laurence Nugent, singer Aoife Clancy, flute player Asher Gray and fiddler Chris Buckley, with whom he performed at the Milwaukee Irish Festival in 2001.

Early in his introduction to Irish music, Brian discovered the open DADGAD guitar tuning and has stuck with it ever since. His playing style is first and foremost one of sensitivity to the melody and rhythmic feel of music he accompanies. Six years of immersion in Irish traditional music have helped mold his smart and dynamic approach to backing that allows him to find ways to respectfully and creatively add to his many collaborations. In addition to his guitar work, he is a singer with a varied repertoire of songs - from those deep within the tradition to some with a more contemporary flavor. Over the past few years, Brian has also added whistle and flute to his musical arsenal. Brian studied Irish music history, flute and whistle playing and traditional singing for a semester at University College Cork in Cork, Ireland before graduating in 2002 with a music/math double major from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN.
